Acceptable Use Policy 3225
- WCS archives employee e-mail messages for 3 years.
- Teachers will educate students in appropriate online behavior, Internet safety, and cyber bullying.
- No person may use school equipment, software, or email for personal gain, profit, or to promote a political position. WCS does not support the advertisement of any product or the promotion of any political agenda via electronic communications. It is the responsibility of school administrators to address such violations.
- Users will not create or transmit chain letters via e-mail.
- Passwords and other personal information will not be shared or posted. Users will not attempt to log in to any system or software using credentials other than their own
- Faculty will have the capability to login a wireless laptop, tablet, or Smartphone using staff credentials for wireless Internet access. These devices may NOT be directly cabled into the network, but will be allowed to connect wirelessly.
Hardware Policy 3221
- The Technology Department must approve the purchase of all new technology equipment.
- Complete and submit the Hardware Consideration Request Form before applying for a grant or purchasing hardware.
Software Policy 3222
- All software purchases or grant requests for software must be approved by the Technology Department.
- Complete and submit the Software Consideration Request Form before applying for a grant or purchasing software.
Web 2.0 Policy 3223
- Teachers must thoroughly preview all online resources before using them with students.
- Teachers are responsible for monitoring content and maintaining student privacy and personal information.
- School Administrators must be made aware of communication projects and how it aligns with the curriculum.
- Students must be made aware of the dangers of sharing personal or detailed information about themselves or anyone else.
- In accordance with the Children’s Online Protection Privacy Act (COPPA), students who are under the age of 13 will be required to have parental/guardian consent before using certain websites. For these websites, teachers will be responsible for receiving parental permission before the site is used by students under the age of 13.
- Certain websites require permission for use by any student; teachers are responsible for reading the terms of agreement for websites before use with students and receiving parental permission if required.
- Student images, audio, and videos may be posted with the approval of the principal. All videos for public viewing depicting students must comply with Student Records Policy 4700.
Program Viewing Policy 3224
- Teachers are responsible for following all guidelines for programs used in their lesson plans even when utilized by a substitute teacher.
- A substitute teacher’s use of programs should be in keeping with the teacher’s lesson plan. Emergency use of irrelevant programs is not in compliance with Section 110 (1) of the Copyright Statute (U.S. Code, Title 17).
- Rated programs (PG, PG-13, R) viewed on or off campus must be preceded by permission from the Principal and the Parental Permission for Viewing of Rated and Questionable Non-Rated Programs form must returned for ALL students in the class.
- Permission forms must be kept on file. Rated media in the school collection must be clearly marked with precautions including the reasons for restriction (i.e. language, sexual content, violence).
- Elementary and middle school students may not view R-rated programs.
- No student will be allowed to view NC-17 movies (“No One/Child 17 and under admitted”).
- If a student does not have permission to view a PG, PG-13 or R-rated program, the teacher must give that student a non- punitive alternative assignment.
- Teachers are required to preview all pre-recorded programs before student viewing.

Movie Licensing USA
- Wilkes County Schools did update Movie Licensing USA for all schools this year.
- If movies are shown publicly (as a community event), schools must pay extra per viewing.
- Movie Licensing USA is a subscription that allows schools to show any movie licensed for "Home Use Only" from the following production companies ONLY: Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Focus Features, Paramount, NBC Universal, MCM, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax, Summit Entertainment, Lionsgate, Screen Gems, United Artists, New Line Cinema, Columbia Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Paramount Vantage, TriStar Pictures, Disney Pixar, Fine Line Pictures, and Warner Independent Pictures.

- Each principal will have editorial control and responsibility for the content of the individual school's official website.
- The content of school web pages must be approved by the school principal.
- Precautions should be taken to protect the safety of students and staff including the following: home addresses or telephone numbers will not be listed, student email addresses will not be listed, photographs of students and student work will be used only as approved for release as directory information under WCS Policy 4700 Student Records, and students will be referred to by first name and last initial only.
Copyright Compliance 3230
- Employees, students, and visitors are prohibited from the use or duplication of any copyright materials not allowed by copyright law, fair use guidelines, licenses, or contractual agreements.
- Unless allowed as "fair use" under federal law, permission must be acquired from the copyright owner prior to copying copyrighted material (See Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Media)
